Critical care research plays a vital role in improving outcomes for critically ill patients, driving advancements in knowledge, treatment, and protocols of complex conditions. But studies can, and frequently do, go wrong. This session will delve into the frequent challenges and shortcomings that researchers encounter in the dynamic and high-stakes field of critical care research. Speakers will highlight issues such as inadequate study design, confounding variables, and difficulties in translating findings from controlled settings to real-world clinical practice. Speakers will emphasize challenges in study design, heterogeneity of treatment effect, and interpretation of surrogate end points and statistical overreach. Practical examples and evidence-based strategies will be discussed, aiming to equip attendees with the tools to identify and mitigate these pitfalls, ultimately fostering more robust and impactful research outcomes in critical care.
