Cerebrovascular medicine is rapidly evolving. Up to 12% of patients admitted to non-neurologic ICUs may have a neurologic complication during their stay, often an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. All intensivists must understand the rapidly changing literature on acute stroke care. This session will use clinical cases to review the role of head CT in diagnosing neurologic emergencies and how the care team can leverage this information to understand stroke/cerebral hemorrhage etiology and complication risks. Speakers will discuss management of acute ischemic stroke (mechanical thrombectomy, large core infarction, malignant edema management), and hemorrhagic stroke (bundled care, minimally invasive clot evacuation). Paired with each etiology of stroke, a pharmacist will review evidence for the latest ischemic stroke treatments, such as tenecteplase and antiplatelet infusions for ischemic stroke, as well as the mounting evidence for various reversal strategies in intracerebral hemorrhage.
