Triage is the complex process of prioritizing the allocation of critical resources. It is reserved for situations associated with crisis-level shortages. In the ICU, triage occurs when the demand for critical care services exceeds its capacity. This happens not only in crisis situations (both short- and long-term), but in day-to-day operations around the globe. Prioritizing patients requires not only the management of resources (e.g., equipment, staffing, patient-flow efficiency) but also requires appropriate care for all patients. This session will cover the complexities of triaging patients, review SCCM's new guidelines on triage of adult patients in the ICU, and propose options on where to go from here.
