Patricia M. Mello, MD (she/her/hers)

Associacao De Medicina Intensiva Brasileira (AMIB), Piaui, Brazil

Dr. Patricia Mello is the Past President (2024–2025) of the Brazilian Association of Intensive Care Medicine (AMIB). She serves as Head of the Critical Care Department at Hospital de Terapia Intensiva and is a Professor of Medicine at UNIFACID–DeVry. She has also held academic appointments as Professor of Medicine at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) and at the State University of Piauí (UESPI).
Dr. Mello earned her medical degree and a Master’s degree in Health Sciences from the Federal University of Piauí, Brazil. She subsequently completed her Internal Medicine residency and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Cooper Hospital–UMDNJ in the United States. She is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM); in Critical Care Medicine by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and the Brazilian Association of Intensive Care Medicine (AMIB); and in Emergency Medicine by the Brazilian Association of Emergency Medicine (ABRAMED).
She returned to Brazil in 2002, the same year in which Critical Care Medicine became fully recognized as a medical specialty and formal residency programs were established nationwide. At that time, she led the implementation of the first Critical Care Medicine fellowship program in her state. Dr. Mello has since played a prominent role within AMIB, holding several leadership positions, including Director of the Division of Postgraduate Courses, President of the Critical Care Medicine Board Certification Committee, President of the Intensivist Professional Defense Committee, member of the AMIB Executive Board, and President of AMIB (2024–2025).
Dr. Mello has authored numerous peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters and served on the editorial board of the Brazilian Journal of Intensive Care from 2004 to 2024. Her sustained commitment to medical education and clinical excellence has been recognized with multiple awards over the years. Through her leadership in Critical Care Medicine and her work within AMIB, she has played a pivotal role in the development and strengthening of the specialty in Brazil.
