Dr. Sharon Irving is a Professor in the Department of Family & Community Health at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She holds the Miriam Stirl Endowed Term Chair in Nutrition. She has a clinical appointment at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and is the current Clinical Nurse Scientist in the Critical Care Center for Evidence and Outcomes in the Department of Critical Care Nursing.
The foundation of her work is nutrition therapy for infants and children during and immediately following critical illness. As a provider, Dr. Irving has focused her work on obtaining and interpreting accurate anthropometric measurements, determining nutrient requirements, optimizing nutritional delivery, monitoring tolerance, and evaluating patients' responses to nutrition provision. She enjoys engaging in multidisciplinary, collaborative clinical education and practice, research inquiry, and quality improvement initiatives. As a Professor at Penn Nursing, Dr. Irving teaches prelicensure and graduate-level nursing students and is engaged in master's education in nutrition science.
Dr. Irving is a co-author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, including the comprehensive nutrition support guidelines for critically ill children, endorsed by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) and the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). Her commitment to pediatric critical care, advancement of the Acute/Critical Care NP role, and focus on clinical nutrition as therapy in pediatric critical illness have earned Dr. Irving fellowships in the American College of Critical Care, the American Academy of Nursing, ASPEN, National Academies of Practice, and the Leonard Davis Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. She has earned many honors and awards recognizing her leadership in both clinical practice and education.
