Hello my name is Diane Delzingaro Gorman, MSN, CRNP. I currently work at PENN Presbyterian in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am an acute care nurse practitioner in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. I have over 33 years of critical care experience. I am the manager of an unique model made up of 11 adavanced practice providers and 5 physcican hospitalists. We specialize in caring for the complex medical patients of West Philadelphia and are a tertiary care center for the tristate area. Our MICU APPs excel in multiple dimensions, including education, patientcare, academic engagement, and research. They were the first in the healthsystem to welcome physician hospitalists to the team, and since 2010 more than 40 internal medicine graduates have served as MICU hospitalists, learning important critical care skills while working hand-in-hand with MICU APPs. PPMC-MICU is a sought-after clinical rotation for residents, medical students, and critical care fellows, because of the model of practice our APPs provide. The APPs work in a high-volume ICU, caring for medically complex patients with significant psychosocial needs, while achieving low rates of hospital-acquired infections and other complications. They have significant ultrasound and procedural expertise, and robust training in palliative care, facilitation of end-of-life discussions, and adverse event
disclosure. They participate in simulation sessions, POCUS conferences, and case studies during APP week. They also participate in academic research studying important critical care topics including palliative care, sedation interruption, spontaneous breathing trials, and recently creating an ICU anagement algorithm for complicated opioid withdrawal patients, in collaboration with ICU pharmacists. They participate in local unit-based initiatives to optimize
interprofessional communication, decrease low value care, and optimize ICU outcomes.
