Amelia Smyth, BA, is a third-year medical student at Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed her undergraduate education at UC Santa Cruz with degrees in Chemistry and Fine Arts, where she conducted research in green chemistry and biochemical synthesis of FDA-approved medicinal drugs. After beginning medical school, she shifted her research focus to perioperative ethics, examining how Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders are managed in surgical settings. Her current work uses a mixed-methods approach to investigate clinician knowledge, practices, and decision-making regarding perioperative DNR orders, as well as patient autonomy and expectations, with the goal of improving patient-centered outcomes through evidence-based policy interventions.
