Sandra Ximena Olaya Garay, MD, OB/GYN, FCCM-equivalent, PhD, is an Obstetrician–Gynecologist and Critical Care Physician and serves as Coordinator of the Obstetric Critical Care Unit at Hospital Universitario San Jorge and SES Hospital de Caldas, Colombia, and as a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Critical Care Medicine at multiple academic institutions.
Dr. Olaya has more than 15 years of experience in obstetric critical care, with direct clinical management of over 4,000 critically ill pregnant and postpartum patients. She has led the development and implementation of six obstetric intensive care units in tertiary hospitals in Colombia, contributing significantly to system-level improvements in maternal critical care.
She holds a PhD in Education Sciences (with honors) and has extensive expertise in medical education, simulation-based training, interdisciplinary team development, and case-based learning. Dr. Olaya is an active researcher and author of peer-reviewed publications focusing on obstetric hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, sepsis, maternal hemodynamics, and patient safety.
She currently serves as Coordinator of the Obstetric Critical Care Committee of the Pan-American and Iberian Federation of Intensive Care Medicine (FEPIMCTI) and has held leadership roles within national critical care societies. Dr. Olaya is a frequent international speaker and her current interests include telemedicine, tele-ICU models, clinical simulation, and innovation in obstetric critical care systems.
