Syed Anjum Khan, MD, FRCP, FCCM
Dr Khan is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and serves as Chair of Critical Care and Education at Mayo Clinic Health System in Minnesota. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Neurocritical Care.
After completing his Critical Care Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester in 2005 , Dr. Khan played a pivotal role in developing a structured intensivist-led critical care model at Mayo Clinic Health System–Mankato. Under her leadership, the ICU implemented a dedicated multidisciplinary care model in 2007 with 24/7 intensivist presence and has consistently been ranked the best or second-best ICU in the state of Minnesota by Healthgrades over several years.
Dr. Khan has been deeply involved in clinical research, including active participation in COVID-19 research during the pandemic. She contributed to COVID-19 Virus Registry, and is an editor of the text book Critical Care and COVID 19 to address gaps in knowledge during the pandemic.
Passionate about improving ICU outcomes, Dr. Khan led a multidisciplinary Mayo Clinic team in developing the MARCH score an innovative mobility readiness tool designed to identify ICU patients ready for safe mobilization. This will be available real time within Epic. A validation process is underway, and development of a calculator version for the global critical care community.
In the community hospital setting, she has made meaningful contributions across all three shields of academic practice: patient care, education, and research.She has authored more than 140 papers, including 85 peer-reviewed , and has edited three books.
Dr. Khan is a Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) Director and an Emergency Neurocritical Care Life Support (ENLS) trainer, reflecting her ongoing commitment to education and training in critical care medicine. She is actively involved in various committes in SCCM.
