Dr. Michael Pinsky is a Professor of Critical Care Medicine, Bioengineering, and Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also Docteur Honoris Casusa at the Universite Rene Descartes Paris V School of Medicine (Paris, France) in 2002, In 2012 he became one of the first 20 critical care physicians to receive Master of Critical Care Medicine (MCCM) from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is currently an Emeritus (Honorary) Attending at UPMC, Vice Chair Emeritus Department of Critical Care Medicine as well as a faculty member of the Center for Critical Care Nephrology and the Center for Military Medicine Research. He received his MD from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, completed his post-graduate internal medicine residency and pulmonary fellowship at Stanford University and advanced physiological training at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes.
He was Director of the Cardiopulmonary Research Laboratory since its inception over 42 years ago and is now Director Emeritus as of September 2023. He is Program Director Emeritus for NRSA training program "Experimental Therapeutics in Critical Illness" which he had created and directed for the 20 years until four years ago. He is also a part of the training faculty of four other NRSA training grants and mentor for one K grant awardee. He has edited 27 medical textbooks, authored >460 peer-reviewed publications, >220 chapters and supported >550 abstract presentations. He was the Editor-in-Chief of MedScape’s Critical Care Medicine section until 2021, and on the editorial boards of Critical Care, Journal of Critical Care, Current Opinion in Critical Care, Annals of Critical Care, and Intensive Care Medicine. He is an ad hoc reviewer for NHLBI K, R and Special Interest Awards annually. His research interests include cardiopulmonary physiology, predictive analytics and AI in healthcare for which he has several NIH and DoD grants in support.
