Oliver Karam, MD, PhD (he/him/his)

Yale Medicine, Connecticut

Dr. Karam holds the position of Professor of Pediatrics and currently serves as Chief of Pediatric Critical Care at Yale since 2022. After obtaining his MD from the University of Geneva in 2002. And completing his clinical training in Pediatrics in 2007, Dr. Karam pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Montreal, Canada, concluded in 2010. He also earned an MSc in Epidemiology in Montreal, followed by a PhD in Clinical Research from the University of Lille, France in 2017.
Upon concluding his fellowship in 2010, Dr. Karam returned to Geneva University Hospital, where he was appointed medical director of the PICU and fellowship program director. In 2017, he transitioned to Richmond, Virginia, rising to the rank of Division Chief in 2019. He joined the Yale Faculty in 2022 as Section Chief.
Dr. Karam's research career revolves around transfusion strategies for critically ill children. With over 150 peer-reviewed publications, he is recognized as an expert in several international panels, such as Transfusion and Anemia Expert Initiative or Surviving Sepsis. He also contributes to multiple journals, serving both on the editorial board and as a reviewer. Dr. Karam is a past-chair of BloodNet, the largest pediatric blood research network, and currently heads the Scientific Committee of PediECMO, the main research network on pediatric ECMO. Finally, he served as a Visiting Professor at institutions including Johns Hopkins, the University of Iowa, Nemours Children’s Health, Weill Cornell, and New York Presbyterian.
