Bio: Krista L. Haines, DO, MA, is a trauma and surgical critical care surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care at Duke University School of Medicine, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Population Health Sciences. She also serves as the Medical Director of Ethics for Duke University Health System.
Dr. Haines’ clinical practice focuses on trauma and critical care, and her research program centers on nutrition, sarcopenia, and recovery after critical illness and injury, particularly in older adults. Her work integrates clinical trials, outcomes research, and patient reported outcomes to improve functional recovery after trauma and major surgery.
Through her role in health system ethics, Dr. Haines works at the intersection of clinical care, policy, and ethics consultation, with particular interest in end of life decision making, organ donation, and the ethical challenges that arise in the care of critically ill patients.
