Augustin Casals, MD (PGY-6)
Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellow, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
I am a third-year Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellow at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. I completed my pediatric residency at the University of Virginia and earned my medical degree from the University of Mississippi.
My current research focuses on the measurement of resting energy expenditure in mechanically ventilated children with acute respiratory distress syndrome. I am particularly interested in evaluating the accuracy of volumetric capnography-based energy equations compared with traditional predictive models, with the goal of optimizing metabolic support in critical illness.
Beyond research, I contribute to several institutional committees devoted to patient safety, trainee wellness, education, and recruitment. My professional interests include critical care nutrition and metabolism, global health, and the mentorship of future pediatric intensivists.
I am committed to a career in pediatric critical care that integrates clinical care, education, and translational research to advance outcomes for critically ill children worldwide.
