Nirosshan Thiruchelvam, MD, FACP, FCCP, CHSE, is a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine physician at the Mercy Hospital Buffalo and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo. He is a Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Consultant, with a national focus on critical care ultrasound education, hemodynamic assessment, lung and diaphragm ultrasound, and procedural guidance in the ICU. Dr. Thiruchelvam is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine, holds Testemer certification from the National Board of Echocardiography, and is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE).
Dr. Thiruchelvam completed a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, OH, and has an extensive background in critical care clinical research, serving as co-investigator on multiple NIH- and NHLBI-sponsored multicenter trials focused on severe COVID-19, sepsis, ARDS, anticoagulation strategies, host-directed therapies, and long-term outcomes after critical illness. His work includes participation in the ACTIV-4, ACTIV-3/TICO, REMAP-CAP, PETAL Network, TESICO, ASTER, and CHILL trials, with publications in The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet Infectious Diseases, and JAMA Network Open. His academic interests bridge critical care ultrasound, sepsis, simulation-based education, research in acute respiratory failure and shock.
