The American College of Surgeons is dedicated to improving the care of the surgical patient and safeguarding standards of care in an optimal and ethical practice environment. With more than 90,000 members, the American College of Surgeons is the largest and most robust surgical organization in the world. High-quality surgery leads to greater access for patients, fewer complications, lower cost of care, and better outcomes. The ACS is also committed to advocating for surgeons and patient safety. We advocate at the federal level by advancing our health policy agenda through Congress via lobbying activities, grassroots efforts, and political affairs. Additionally, state legislatures can often meet needs in a way that Congress cannot, making grassroots advocacy even more essential. The College monitors all 50 states to not only defend against unwelcome legislation, but also to proactively identify issues and develop strategies that ACS Chapters can use to make the best use of their resources. We also ensure that our regulatory strategies are focused on physician and facility payment, quality, value-based care, digital health, coding, billing, and reimbursement practice. Quality has been the cornerstone of the ACS since its founding 110 years ago and the ACS continues to provide accreditation and verification programs, products, guidelines, and tools to improve surgical quality. Our accreditation and verification programs, products, guidelines, and tools improve quality in trauma, cancer, breast disease, bariatrics, children's, geriatrics, and overall surgical care.
