Open Sesame: The Magic of POCUS and Its Role in Early and Late Sepsis Management

The resuscitation of patients with sepsis is a constantly evolving landscape. The introduction of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) into the paradigm of sepsis resuscitation has changed management protocols around the world. However, evolving evidence suggests both pros and cons to the implementation of POCUS-based sepsis management. This session will explore the role of POCUS in early and late sepsis management.

Learning Objectives:

  • List the benefits of a resuscitative approach using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for patients with sepsis
  • List the disadvantages of implementing a POCUS-based sepsis resuscitation management protocol
  • Describe the features of early and late sepsis that lend themselves to protocolized management, as well as the pitfalls of protocolized care versus individualized care
