The high prevalence of post-ICU care syndrome (PICS) among ICU survivors reflects the impact of the ICU environment and interventions on neurologic recovery. Changes in mood and cognition after discharge significantly affect long-term functional outcomes and quality of life. This session will explore emerging science behind ICU-related brain dysfunction and long-term brain health, equipping attendees with a foundational understanding of brain injury caused by critical illnesses, neuropsychiatric impact of ICU admission, long-term cognitive trajectories in ICU survivors, neuroimaging correlates of ICU brain dysfunction, and possible medical and lifestyle interventions to maintain brain health after discharge. Speakers will discuss the growing interest in post-ICU recovery clinics led by intensivists.
