Epidemiologic data reveal an increase in the incidence and/or recognition of pediatric venous thromboembolism by 130% to 200% during the past two decades. While the American College of Physicians recommends thromboprophylaxis for hospitalized adults without contraindication, the lack of phase 3 trials of pediatric pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis precludes the creation of universal thromboprophylaxis recommendations for hospitalized children, many of whom are at increased risk of major bleeding. Speakers, who are experts in pediatric thrombosis and hemostasis, will discuss at-risk, prothrombotic pediatric subpopulations and those at elevated risk of bleeding (including from anticoagulant exposure) to spur active dialogue, collaboration, and networking opportunities around a common conundrum routinely faced by clinicians.
