Trauma Drama: Essentials for Success at the Bedside for the Nonsurgeon

The trauma bay is an exciting place to work, but what do you do when they bring the drama to the ICU? This session introduces essential trauma principles needed to safely care for patients in the ICU, including primary and secondary surveillance, bedside rescue maneuvers to save patients who have complications of trauma, massive transfusion by protocol, and caring for a variety of traumatic wounds.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define primary and secondary surveillance for trauma patients, in keeping with advanced trauma life support standards, including examples of successful patient rescue through primary and secondary surveillance
  • Delineate four procedures that can be performed at the bedside without anesthesia
  • List the principles behind protocolized massive transfusion and current standards of resuscitation for the bleeding trauma patient
  • Elucidate dressing management strategies for trauma wounds such as burn, laceration, and crush
