Dr. Gerard A. Baltazar DO FACOS FACS OMT is a general, trauma and critical care surgeon and an associate professor of surgery.
He attended Georgetown University where he received the Howard Hughes Medical Research, the John Carroll emerging leader scholarships, and a bachelor’s degree in biology and fine art. He obtained an osteopathic medicine degree from Touro University in California where he received awards for community service and student life.
Dr. Baltazar completed surgical residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City before completing a fellowship at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. He was the Director of Surgical Critical Care at SBH Health System with a focus on critically underserved Bronx communities before matriculating to NYU Langone Health in 2019 and then Yale Medicine in 2026.
Dr. Baltazar’s post-doctorate work includes an osteopathic manipulative treatment practice for trauma victims and the advancement of chest wall injury surgical technology. In addition, Dr. Baltazar has created and run continuing medical education lecture series and is a founding member of the inclusion, diversity, equity and access committee of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. For his work, Dr. Baltazar has received research and leadership awards from the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and NYU Langone Health. In 2025, he won the Medical Educator of the Year Award from the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society and a Daisy Award for compassionate care.
Dr. Baltazar challenges himself to be a little better every day and to develop a work-life balance through which he can enjoy quality time with his wife, two young daughters, other family and friends. To pay forward his experiences, Dr. Baltazar volunteers to mentor medical students, residents, and young attendings and to support healthcare missions in the developing world.
