Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital
My name is Megan Essman, MD, PSM, and I am a Co-Chief Fellow in Pediatric Critical Care at Case Western Reserve University / Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. My primary interests include resident and fellow education in the PICU. My research focuses on designing and evaluating game-based learning (GBL) as a novel approach to enhance residents’ understanding of blood gas interpretation and ventilator management. In this pursuit, I have mentored graduate-level developers at Case Western and the Cleveland Institute of Art in translating critical care concepts into effective educational design, producing an interactive educational game for future study. In addition to this work, I have directed multiple resident education initiatives and, as Co-Chief Fellow, I helped redesign a systems-based curriculum for the PICU fellows. I am driven by the intellectual rigor of critical care and the meaningful, compassionate relationships formed with patients and families. I look forward to a career dedicated to advancing critical care education and improving the experiences of trainees and patients alike.
