Karen Weaver, MSN, RN, CCRN is a seasoned nursing leader with nearly three decades of experience in pediatric critical care. Currently serving as the Administrative Director of Nursing for the CVICU, PICU, PIMC, Air Transport, and ECMO program at CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, Karen has led transformative initiatives that have significantly improved staffing, engagement, and clinical outcomes. Under her leadership, the PICU earned the AACN Beacon Gold Level designation and the ECMO program achieved ELSO Center of Excellence – Gold Level status.
Karen’s career spans roles in high-acuity environments including pediatric cardiac ICUs and trauma ICUs. She has served as ECMO Coordinator, Pediatric Cardiac Coordinator, and Designated Charge Nurse, consistently driving innovation in simulation training, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her work has led to the development of advanced protocols, mentoring programs, and harm prevention strategies that have elevated care standards across institutions.
A prolific contributor to clinical research, Karen has authored and presented numerous studies and guidelines on ECMO, sedation protocols, and pediatric cardiac care at national symposiums. She is a recognized educator, serving as a long-standing instructor for ECMO and Advanced Cardiac Courses, and a platform presenter at major conferences.
Karen holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University and is completing her Master of Science in Nursing – Leadership and Management from Western Governors University. Driven by a commitment to excellence and compassionate care, Karen continues to shape the future of pediatric critical care through leadership, education, and innovation.
