Brigitte S. Cypress is an internationally recognized critical care nurse scientist and qualitative methodologist whose work advances patient- and family-centered care in the adult intensive care unit. She is an Associate Professor with tenure at Rutgers School of Nursing–Camden, a Laureate Fellow of the International Communicology Institute, and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Cypress’s research focuses on improving the ICU experience for patients, families, and clinicians through enhanced communication, family engagement, and shared decision-making. Her scholarship centers on the implementation and evaluation of family engagement during patient- and family-centered interdisciplinary rounds and the exploration and development of innovative models such as Nurse-TECH-Family, a technology-enhanced intervention designed to increase equitable, meaningful family participation during critical illness. Her work also explores family resilience, nurse communication, and psychosocial consequences of critical illness. Dr. Cypress has secured several funding sources as a principal Investigator, including support from the South Jersey Institute for Population Health, Sigma Theta Tau International, and Rutgers Global. She has also collaborated on interdisciplinary studies addressing heart failure symptom burden, and nurse well-being. Her publication portfolio includes over 36 peer-reviewed articles, two books, and several book chapters, reaching critical care, family science, qualitative methodology, and health policy audiences. She publishes in leading journals, including Intensive & Critical Care Nursing, Nursing Research, Family Relations, Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing, and Nursing Forum. She has delivered more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific presentations across the United States, Europe, and Asia. A committed mentor, Dr. Cypress supports clinician-scholars, graduate students, and interdisciplinary faculty through research development and scholarly dissemination. Her distinguished honors include the ENRS Suzanne Feetham Nurse Scientist Family Research Award, Rutgers Chancellor Award for Research & Creative Activity, Teachers College, Columbia University Research and Scholarship Award, Hall of Fame Award, and the Excellence in Education Award.
