Dr. Tamara Otey is an Associate Professor with a dual position at Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing (GSON) as graduate faculty member and Missouri Baptist Medical Center (MBMC) as a nurse scientist. She is a member of an Academic Practice Partnership with a PhD nurse from the hospital setting; we mentor nurses at MBMC to perform research and evidence-based practice (EBP).
Dr. Otey holds a PhD in Nursing Science with a Minor in Public Health from Indiana University in Indianapolis. She received the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award by Barnes Jewish Alumni Association; she graduated from Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in 1984. Also, she was awarded the 2021 Christner Faculty Award for Excellence in Nursing Research at GSON. Her research trajectory in global health disparities. She has performed scholarship and research in Memphis, TN, St. Louis, MO, and in Imo and Rivers States, Nigeria. Dr. Otey has received eight pilot grants and authored eleven articles.
She has a 21-year history of clinical nursing with Methodist Healthcare in Memphis, TN, where she also engaged in research that focused on oncology medication clinical trials and congestive heart failure studies to decrease patients’ hospitalization and manage care at home. She began her tenure as a nurse educator in 2002 at Methodist School of Nursing, next, the University of Memphis, and currently Goldfarb School of Nursing; 22 years as an educator. Dr. Otey has an impressive record of over 30 conference presentations—15 at the international level, six at the national level, and eight at the local level—this presenter has a deep understanding of audience engagement and impactful communication across platforms.
Dr. Otey is committed to the nursing profession and to improving population health locally and globally. Tamara is the proud mother of Reuben and Sable Otey and three grandsons, Amare’, Ryan, & Legend.
