Dr. Carlos R. Vargas is a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellow at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. He completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and began his fellowship at Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital before continuing his training at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Vargas has developed strong clinical experience caring for high-acuity patients across diverse intensive care settings, including children requiring advanced supportive therapies. His academic interests focus on hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), immune dysregulation, and the intersection between pediatric critical care and oncology. His ongoing research examines HLH presentations and outcomes in critically ill children, including those with underlying malignancies or post–bone marrow transplant complications.
In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Vargas is dedicated to medical education and enjoys teaching residents and medical students. As a bilingual physician, he is committed to advancing equitable care for Hispanic and Spanish-speaking families. He hopes to build a career that integrates high-acuity pediatric critical care, oncologic critical care, and compassionate, inclusive practice.
