Viral respiratory tract infections are a leading cause of hospitalization in children worldwide. RSV and influenza alone result in about 100,000 hospitalizations and as many as 300 deaths among children under the age of 5 each year in the United States. As many as 20% of hospitalized children with viral respiratory infections require ICU care. Severe infections can result in prolonged ventilatory support, long-term pulmonary complications, and significant impact on child health and the healthcare system. This session will explore the latest translational discoveries in the pathobiology of viral respiratory infections in critically ill children. Speakers, who are leading basic and translational physician-scientists in pediatric critical care, will share their research highlighting novel insights into immune responses, host-pathogen interactions, disease mechanisms, and the clinical impact of viral respiratory infections in the pediatric ICU.
