Substance use among healthcare professionals is a greater problem than is acknowledged. Diversion occurs within all healthcare professions. Professionals must recognize signs of diversion. Healthcare systems must have a pathway for handling diversion. Most states have legalized marijuana, increasing the probability of THC use among healthcare professionals. How does marijuana legalization affect them? Are they allowed to use legal THC? Is the law different for them? Alcohol is a legal, readily available substance whose use is often unrecognized because it is socially acceptable. Alcohol is often served at work events. When does socially acceptable drinking turn into a substance use disorder? What resources are available to healthcare professionals struggling with substance use?
